What is zoom ratio?
Zoom ratio is the ratio between the longest and shortest focal lengths of a zoom lens. A 24-70mm lens has approximately 2.9x zoom ratio (70÷24). A 24-240mm has 10x. Higher zoom ratios offer more versatility but generally come with optical quality tradeoffs.
Common zoom ratios and their uses
2-3x zoom (24-70mm, 70-200mm): Professional standard. Excellent sharpness, contrast, and aberration control. The limited range allows the design to be optimized.
4-5x zoom (24-105mm, 24-120mm): Versatile travel and everyday lenses. Slight optical compromise but very practical.
8-10x+ zoom (24-240mm, 28-300mm): Superzoom or all-in-one lenses. Maximum convenience but noticeable compromises — softer corners, more distortion, lower contrast.
The quality tradeoff
Designing a zoom requires optical compromises. The wider the range, the harder it is to maintain sharpness and control aberrations across all focal lengths.
A 24-70mm f/2.8 is significantly sharper than a 24-200mm f/4-6.3 because the design only covers a narrow range.
This is why professionals carry 2-3 quality zooms (16-35, 24-70, 70-200) rather than one superzoom.

When superzooms make sense
Travel: One lens covers everything from wide landscapes to telephoto details. Convenience outweighs the optical compromise.
Learning: A superzoom helps beginners discover which focal lengths they prefer before investing in specialized lenses.
Events where you cannot change lenses: Dusty environments, fast-moving situations, or minimal gear requirements.
For professional work, stick to 2-3x professional zooms or primes.
A good rule: if you can name the specific shots you need the full zoom range for, a superzoom makes sense. If covering all possibilities just in case, two quality zooms will serve you better.
