What is the relationship between sensor size and image quality?
Larger sensors have bigger pixels that collect more light, which directly translates to better low-light performance, wider dynamic range, and more control over depth of field. But sensor size is only one factor — lens quality, pixel technology, and image processing matter just as much.
How sensor size affects your images
Low-light performance: Bigger pixels on a larger sensor collect more photons, producing cleaner images at high ISO. A full frame sensor at ISO 6400 will typically look as clean as an APS-C sensor at ISO 3200.
Dynamic range: Larger sensors capture more tonal information — more detail in shadows and highlights simultaneously. This gives you more flexibility when editing.
Depth of field: For the same field of view and aperture, a larger sensor produces shallower depth of field. This is why full frame cameras create stronger background blur in portraits.
Resolution potential: A larger sensor surface can physically fit more pixels without making each pixel too small.

Medium Format: ~44mm × 33mm — the largest in mainstream cameras. Ultimate image quality but expensive and bulky.
Full Frame: 36mm × 24mm — the professional standard. Best balance of quality and practicality.
