What is the difference between Long GOP and ALL-I codecs?
Long GOP and ALL-I are two different video compression methods. ALL-I compresses each frame independently (like a series of photos), while Long GOP compresses groups of frames together by only recording the differences between them. ALL-I produces larger files but is easier to edit; Long GOP is more efficient.
How each codec works
ALL-I (All Intra): Every single frame is a complete image, compressed independently. No frame depends on any other.
Long GOP (Group of Pictures): Only certain frames (I-frames) are complete. The frames between them (P-frames and B-frames) only store differences from the keyframe. A typical group is 15 frames — 1 complete plus 14 difference frames.
Long GOP is much more efficient because consecutive video frames are usually very similar. Why store the same background 30 times per second when it barely changes?
When to use each
ALL-I is better for: Post-production editing (smoother scrubbing), frame-by-frame color grading, VFX compositing, and situations where every frame needs independent high quality.
Long GOP is better for: Longer recording times, smaller file sizes, lower card requirements, and content that does not need per-frame editing.
File size difference: ALL-I at the same quality can be 2-3x larger. A 10-minute 4K clip might be 15 GB in ALL-I vs 6 GB in Long GOP.

Which should you choose?
For most content creators, Long GOP is the practical choice. File sizes are manageable, card requirements are reasonable, and modern editing software handles it efficiently.
Choose ALL-I for professional post-production — commercial shoots, short films, VFX — where you need the highest per-frame quality.
Many cameras offer both, so you can switch depending on the project.
