What is rolling shutter?
Rolling shutter is a distortion effect that happens when the sensor reads the image line by line from top to bottom instead of all at once. Fast-moving subjects appear warped, bent, or wobbly because they moved during the time it took to scan the full frame.
How rolling shutter creates distortion
Imagine scanning a moving car with a photocopier from top to bottom. By the time the scanner reaches the bottom, the car has moved forward. The result is a slanted, stretched image.
The same thing happens in your camera. The sensor reads row by row — if something moves between the first row and the last row, it appears distorted.
Common artifacts include leaning buildings during fast pans, bent propeller blades, wobbly jello effect in handheld video, and oval-shaped wheels on moving vehicles.

Faster sensor readout is the primary solution. Stacked sensors read so quickly that subjects barely move between the first and last row.

When to worry about rolling shutter
Rolling shutter matters most in handheld video with fast pans, shooting from moving vehicles, and action photography with electronic shutter.
For studio work, portraits, landscapes, and tripod-based shooting, rolling shutter is rarely visible.
