What is phantom power?
Phantom power is a 48-volt DC electrical current sent through the XLR cable from a recorder, mixer, or audio interface to power condenser microphones. It is called phantom because the power travels invisibly through the same cable that carries the audio signal — no separate power cable needed.
Why condenser mics need phantom power
Condenser microphones use an electrically charged diaphragm (or electret element) that requires voltage to operate. Without phantom power, the mic produces no signal or an extremely weak one.
Dynamic microphones generate their own signal through electromagnetic induction (coil + magnet) and do not need phantom power. You can safely send phantom power to a dynamic mic — it simply ignores it.
The standard is +48V DC, though some mics can operate on lower voltages. The current draw is very small — typically 2-10 milliamps.
Where phantom power comes from
Audio interfaces: Nearly every audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett, Universal Audio, etc.) has a phantom power button, usually labeled +48V or P48.
Camera XLR inputs: Professional cameras and camcorders with XLR inputs provide phantom power. Toggle it in the audio menu.
Portable recorders: Devices like the Zoom H5, Tascam DR-40, and similar field recorders have phantom power for their XLR inputs.
Inline phantom power supplies: Small battery-powered adapters that add phantom power to devices that do not have it built in.

Phantom power precautions
Always turn phantom power off before connecting or disconnecting microphones. Hot-plugging with phantom power active can cause a loud pop that may damage speakers or headphones.
Ribbon microphones can be damaged by phantom power. Never send phantom power to a ribbon mic unless the manufacturer specifically says it is safe.
Dynamic mics are safe with phantom power — it will not harm them. But turn it off when using dynamics to save battery on portable recorders.
Check your cables: Phantom power only works through balanced XLR cables. It does not work through unbalanced 3.5mm or 6.3mm cables.
If you are buying a condenser microphone for your camera, make sure your camera has an XLR input with phantom power, or budget for an external audio recorder that provides it. Without phantom power, a condenser mic will not work.
