What is micro four thirds (MFT)?
Micro Four Thirds (MFT) is a mirrorless camera system developed by Olympus and Panasonic that uses a sensor measuring 17.3mm × 13mm — about half the area of full frame. It has a crop factor of 2x, meaning a 25mm MFT lens gives the same field of view as a 50mm on full frame.
The MFT advantage — size and weight
The smaller sensor means the entire system — bodies and lenses — is dramatically more compact and lighter than full frame equivalents. A professional MFT kit weighs roughly half of a comparable full frame setup.
The 2x crop factor gives telephoto lenses incredible reach. A 150mm MFT lens provides the field of view of a 300mm full frame lens in a package one-third the weight.
MFT cameras also benefit from very effective in-body image stabilization because the smaller sensor is easier to move — some cameras achieve 7–8 stops of stabilization.
MFT limitations to know
The smaller sensor means smaller pixels, which results in more noise at high ISO compared to full frame or APS-C at the same resolution.
Depth of field is deeper at the same aperture — achieving extreme background blur requires faster lenses (f/1.2 or wider) to match what f/2.8 does on full frame.
The MFT system has a smaller market share today, which means fewer new lens releases — but the existing lens library is massive and mature.

How to get the most from your dynamic range
Always shoot in RAW format — JPEG throws away the shadow and highlight detail that dynamic range provides.
Use Expose to the Right (ETTR) technique — slightly overexpose without clipping highlights, then bring exposure down in post. This maximizes signal-to-noise ratio in shadows.
For extreme scenes, use HDR bracketing — take multiple exposures and merge them for even more range.
Dynamic range is one of the most impactful specs for photographers who edit their images. A camera with 14 stops of dynamic range gives you dramatic flexibility to rescue underexposed shots and recover blown highlights.
