What is ISO?
ISO controls the sensor’s sensitivity to light. Lower ISO (100-200) produces clean, noise-free images but requires more light. Higher ISO (3200-12800) brightens the image in darkness but introduces visible noise — grain-like texture that reduces quality.
How ISO affects your images
Base ISO (100-200): Maximum quality. No visible noise. Full dynamic range. Use outdoors, in studios, and on tripods.
Mid ISO (800-3200): Slight noise but easily cleaned in editing. Perfectly usable for indoor events, street photography, and dim environments.
High ISO (6400-25600): Noticeable noise with reduced color accuracy and dynamic range. Necessary for very dark environments. Modern cameras handle this much better than older models.
Extended ISO (51200+): Emergency use only. Heavy noise and reduced detail.
Native vs extended ISO
Every sensor has a native ISO range where analog gain circuitry operates optimally. Within this range, increasing ISO genuinely amplifies the signal.
Extended ISO (marked Hi1, Hi2, or L) is processed digitally rather than through analog amplification. More noise and reduced dynamic range.
Always stay within native ISO range when possible. Extended settings are a last resort.

ISO myths vs reality
Myth: Always use the lowest ISO. Reality: A sharp photo at ISO 3200 is infinitely better than a blurry photo at ISO 100 with too slow a shutter speed.
Myth: High ISO ruins images. Reality: Modern full frame cameras produce clean, usable images at ISO 6400 and beyond.
Myth: Noise is always bad. Reality: Luminance noise (monochromatic grain) often looks pleasing and film-like. Chroma noise (colored blotches) is what looks ugly.
Use Auto ISO with a maximum limit. Set the upper limit to the highest ISO you find acceptable for your camera and let the camera adjust within that range automatically.
