What is intra-frame vs inter-frame compression?
Intra-frame compression treats each frame independently — like a series of individually compressed photos. Inter-frame compression compresses groups of frames together by only storing the changes between them. This is the fundamental distinction between ALL-I and Long GOP codecs.
Intra-frame (ALL-I) — how it works
Every frame is compressed on its own. Frame 1 is a complete compressed image. Frame 2 is another complete image. No frame references any other.
Advantage: Every frame is independently high quality. Scrubbing through the timeline is instant. Individual frames can be extracted as high-quality stills.
Disadvantage: File sizes are 2-3x larger because every frame stores redundant information like a static background.
Inter-frame (Long GOP) — how it works
Frames are grouped (typically 12-15 per group). The first frame is complete. Subsequent frames store only what changed.
If your background is a static wall and only the subject moves, inter-frame only stores the movement — not the entire wall again. Extremely efficient.
Advantage: Much smaller files at the same visual quality. Longer recording times per card.
Disadvantage: Editing software must decode the entire group to display any single frame, demanding more processing power.

Which to choose for your work
For event videography, documentaries, and long-form content — use inter-frame (Long GOP). The file size savings are enormous and modern editors handle it well.
For VFX, compositing, commercial work, and frame-accurate grading — use intra-frame (ALL-I). Per-frame quality justifies larger files.
If unsure, start with Long GOP and switch to ALL-I only if you encounter specific issues.
Modern editing software like DaVinci Resolve handles Long GOP very efficiently. The old advice that ALL-I is always better for editing is less true today — test both with your hardware.
