What is heat throttling in cameras?
Heat throttling occurs when a camera’s sensor and processor generate too much heat during video recording, forcing the camera to stop recording or reduce performance to prevent hardware damage. It is one of the biggest limitations of compact mirrorless cameras shooting high-resolution video.
Why cameras overheat
Recording 4K or 8K video at high bitrates puts enormous demands on the sensor and image processor, generating significant heat.
Compact mirrorless bodies have very little internal space for heat dissipation. No fans, no large heat sinks — just a small metal body trying to radiate heat.
Higher resolutions (8K vs 4K), higher frame rates (120fps vs 30fps), and higher bitrates all increase heat generation.
How manufacturers address it
Active cooling fans: Cameras like the Canon EOS R5 C and Sony FX3 have built-in fans for unlimited recording. Slightly larger body as tradeoff.
Heat sinks and body design: Some cameras use the body itself as a heat sink with thermally conductive materials.
Recording time limits: Many cameras impose 30-minute or 15-minute limits in demanding modes.

How to minimize overheating
Turn the camera off between takes — do not leave it idle in record-standby mode, which keeps the sensor generating heat.
Avoid direct sunlight on the camera body. Shade the camera whenever possible.
Flip the rear screen out — this allows heat to escape from the back of the body.
Use lower recording modes when you do not need maximum quality. 4K 30fps generates far less heat than 4K 120fps.
