What is global shutter?
A global shutter exposes and reads every pixel on the sensor simultaneously — the entire image is captured in one instant. This completely eliminates rolling shutter distortion, making it the ultimate solution for photographing fast-moving subjects.
Global shutter vs rolling shutter
With a rolling shutter, the sensor reads line by line from top to bottom. If something moves during the readout, it appears distorted — propellers bend, buildings lean, car wheels look oval.
With a global shutter, every pixel captures light at exactly the same moment. Nothing can move between the first and last pixel because there is no time gap.
The Sony A9 III was the first full frame mirrorless camera with a global shutter. It solved a problem that photographers and filmmakers had dealt with for over a decade.
Why global shutter took so long
Global shutter requires additional circuitry at every single pixel to store the charge until the entire sensor is read. This reduces the light-sensitive area, which historically meant worse low-light performance and less dynamic range.
Sony solved this with advanced stacked architecture that maintains competitive image quality while adding global shutter capability.
The technology is still expensive to manufacture, which is why it currently appears only in flagship cameras.

Does bigger always mean better?
Not always. A modern APS-C sensor from 2024 outperforms a full frame sensor from 2015 in almost every measurable way. Technology improvements can offset size differences.
The lens you put on the camera matters enormously. A sharp f/1.4 prime on APS-C will produce better images than a soft kit zoom on full frame.
For video, many APS-C cameras offer features like 10-bit internal recording and Log profiles that rival or exceed what some full frame cameras offer.
Match sensor size to your actual needs and budget. If you shoot in studios with controlled lighting, APS-C is more than enough. If you shoot events in dark venues or need extreme background separation, full frame pays for itself.
