What is gimbal payload?
Gimbal payload is the maximum weight a gimbal can support and stabilize effectively. It includes the total weight of your camera body, lens, microphone, monitor, and any other accessories mounted on the gimbal. Exceeding the payload results in poor stabilization, motor strain, and shortened battery life.
Why payload matters
A gimbal uses electric motors to counteract the weight and movement of your camera. Each motor has a limited torque capacity.
If the camera setup is too heavy, the motors cannot keep up — the gimbal vibrates, drifts, or fails to hold the camera level. The footage looks worse than handheld.
If the setup is too light for a large gimbal, the motors may overreact to small movements, creating jittery micro-corrections.
The ideal load is 60-80% of the rated maximum. This gives the motors enough headroom to handle sudden movements without strain.
How to calculate your payload
Add up the weight of everything that goes on the gimbal:
Camera body: Check the spec sheet (e.g., Canon R6 II = 670g, Sony A7 IV = 658g).
Lens: This is often the heaviest part (e.g., 24-70mm f/2.8 = 800-900g, 70-200mm f/2.8 = 1000-1400g).
Accessories: Microphone (50-200g), cage (100-200g), small monitor (150-300g), cables, follow focus.
Total example: Camera (670g) + 24-70mm (900g) + mic (100g) = 1,670g. You need a gimbal rated for at least 2,000g (2 kg).

Gimbal payload categories
Under 1 kg: Smartphone and action camera gimbals. Not suitable for mirrorless cameras.
1-2 kg: Compact mirrorless setups. Works with small bodies + prime lenses or lightweight zooms. Examples: DJI RS 3 Mini, Zhiyun Weebill 3.
2-3.5 kg: The sweet spot for most mirrorless setups with zoom lenses. Examples: DJI RS 3, Zhiyun Crane 3S.
3.5 kg+: Cinema cameras and heavy setups. DJI RS 4 Pro, Zhiyun Crane 4.
Plan for your heaviest lens combination, not your lightest. If you own a 70-200mm f/2.8, buy a gimbal that handles that weight comfortably — you can always use lighter lenses on a stronger gimbal, but not the reverse.
