What is edge softness?
Edge softness refers to reduced sharpness at the corners and edges of an image compared to the center. All lenses are sharpest in the center and somewhat softer at the edges — how much softer depends on lens quality, aperture, and focal length.
Why edges are softer than the center
Light rays entering at steep angles (heading to corners) pass through more glass at oblique angles than rays heading straight to the center. This introduces aberrations — field curvature, astigmatism, and coma — that reduce sharpness.
Correcting edge aberrations requires complex, expensive optical designs with aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements. This is a major reason premium lenses cost more.
Edge softness is typically worst at wide open apertures and improves significantly by f/5.6 or f/8.
When edge softness matters
Landscape photography: You need the entire frame sharp corner to corner. Edge softness is very visible.
Architecture: Fine detail at the edges must be rendered sharply.
Group portraits: People at the edges should be as sharp as those in the center.
Portraits with center subject: Edge softness is often irrelevant — the subject is sharp in the center and soft edges contribute to a pleasing vignette.

How to minimize edge softness
Stop down: Most lenses improve dramatically by f/5.6 to f/8. Edge sharpness at f/8 is typically much better than wide open.
Use higher quality lenses: Premium lenses with aspherical and ED elements maintain sharpness further into the corners.
Apply lens correction profiles: Software can sharpen edges and correct field curvature, partially compensating for optical softness.
When reading lens reviews, pay attention to corner sharpness charts. If you shoot landscapes or architecture, corner performance matters as much as center performance. For portraits and video, center sharpness is what counts.
