What is color temperature (Kelvin)?
Color temperature describes the warmth or coolness of a light source, measured in Kelvin (K). Lower values (2700-3500K) produce warm, orange-yellow light like candles and tungsten bulbs. Higher values (5500-7500K) produce cool, blue-white light like daylight and overcast skies.
The Kelvin scale in practice
1800-2700K: Candlelight and warm incandescent bulbs. Very warm, orange tone.
3200K: Tungsten/halogen studio lights and traditional indoor lighting. Warm but controlled.
4000-4500K: Fluorescent lights and some LED panels. Neutral-warm, common in offices.
5500-5600K: Daylight and flash. Considered neutral — the standard reference point.
6500-7500K: Overcast sky and open shade. Cool, blue-ish tone.
8000K+: Heavy overcast or blue hour twilight. Very cool, strongly blue.
Why color temperature matters
Your camera needs to know the color temperature of the light source to render colors accurately. This is what white balance does — it compensates for the color of the light so whites look white.
If your camera is set to daylight (5500K) but you are shooting under tungsten lights (3200K), everything will look orange. Set white balance to tungsten and the camera compensates.
For lighting equipment, color temperature determines whether lights can be mixed. A 3200K light and a 5600K light in the same scene creates an unnatural color split.

Choosing the right color temperature
For studio photography and video, match all your lights to the same Kelvin value. 5600K (daylight) is the most versatile.
Bi-color LED panels let you adjust color temperature from 2700K to 6500K, making them extremely flexible for any environment.
For creative effect, intentionally mixing warm and cool light creates visual interest — warm key light with cool fill is a classic cinema technique.
When buying LED lights for video, always check the color temperature range. A bi-color light (2700K-6500K) is far more versatile than a daylight-only (5600K) light, especially when mixing with indoor ambient lighting.
