What is bit depth?
Bit depth describes how many levels of brightness each pixel can record. An 8-bit image has 256 levels per color channel, a 10-bit image has 1,024, and a 14-bit RAW file has 16,384. More levels means smoother gradients, better color accuracy, and more flexibility in editing.
Why bit depth matters for editing
When you push shadows brighter or pull highlights darker in post-processing, you are stretching the tonal data. With only 256 levels (8-bit), this stretching quickly produces visible banding — ugly step-like transitions in skies, skin tones, and gradients.
With 14-bit RAW (16,384 levels), you have 64 times more tonal information. You can push exposure by 3–4 stops and still get smooth results.
This is why professional photographers always shoot RAW — the extra bit depth is invisible in the original file but becomes critical the moment you start editing.
Bit depth in video
Most cameras record video internally at 8-bit (256 levels) or 10-bit (1,024 levels). The difference is massive for color grading.
8-bit video breaks apart quickly when you apply color grading or LUTs. You will see banding in skies and gradients.
10-bit gives you 4x more color information — essential for shooting in Log profiles where heavy grading is part of the workflow.
If you plan to color grade your video, 10-bit internal recording should be a non-negotiable requirement.

Who needs global shutter?
Sports and action photographers who shoot with electronic shutter and need zero distortion on fast-moving subjects.
Studio photographers using flash — global shutter enables flash sync at any shutter speed, not just below 1/250s.
Video professionals shooting fast action — no more jello effect on quick pans.
For most other photography — portraits, landscapes, travel, vlogging — a fast stacked sensor is more than sufficient.
