What is APS-C crop factor?
Crop factor is a number that describes how much narrower the field of view is on a smaller sensor compared to full frame. Canon APS-C has a crop factor of 1.6x, while Sony, Nikon, and Fujifilm APS-C have 1.5x. Multiply any lens focal length by the crop factor to get the equivalent field of view.
How crop factor works in practice
A 50mm lens on a Canon APS-C body gives you the same field of view as an 80mm lens on full frame (50 × 1.6 = 80). The lens is still physically 50mm — nothing changes optically — but you only see the center crop of the image.
An 18mm wide-angle on APS-C behaves like a 29mm on full frame — still wide, but not ultra-wide.
A 200mm telephoto on APS-C behaves like a 320mm on full frame — a genuine advantage for wildlife and sports.
Crop factor only affects field of view
Crop factor does not change the aperture, bokeh characteristics at a given distance, or the optical quality of the lens. An f/1.8 lens is still f/1.8 for exposure purposes.
It does affect the equivalent depth of field — a 50mm f/1.8 on APS-C gives roughly the same depth of field as a 75mm f/2.8 on full frame.
This is why full frame cameras produce more background blur at equivalent framing.

How to choose the right balance
If you shoot in low light frequently (events, concerts, nighttime) — prioritize cameras with lower megapixel counts and larger pixels.
If you need maximum detail (landscape, commercial, large prints) — high megapixel cameras are worth the tradeoff.
If you want the best of both worlds — look for cameras that offer pixel binning modes, combining adjacent pixels for better low-light performance.
Never judge a camera by megapixels alone. A 24MP full frame sensor will produce dramatically cleaner low-light images than a 48MP smartphone sensor because each pixel is physically 10x larger.
