What is aperture?
Aperture is the opening inside a lens that controls how much light reaches the sensor. It is measured in f-stops — a smaller f-number means a larger opening, more light, and shallower depth of field. A larger f-number means a smaller opening, less light, and more of the scene in focus.
How aperture affects your images
Light: Opening the aperture wider (lower f-number) lets in more light, allowing faster shutter speeds or lower ISO in dim conditions.
Depth of field: At f/1.4 or f/1.8, only a thin slice of the scene is in sharp focus — everything else melts into smooth blur. At f/8 or f/11, most of the scene is sharp from foreground to background.
Sharpness: Most lenses are sharpest 2-3 stops from wide open. An f/1.4 lens is often sharpest around f/2.8-f/4. Going too small (f/16-f/22) introduces diffraction softening.
The f-stop scale
Each full f-stop doubles or halves the light: f/1.4 → f/2 → f/2.8 → f/4 → f/5.6 → f/8 → f/11 → f/16.
f/1.4 lets in 16 times more light than f/5.6. This is why fast lenses (f/1.4, f/1.8) are so valuable for low-light shooting.
Modern cameras adjust in 1/3 stops (f/3.2, f/3.5, f/4.0) for finer exposure control.

Choosing the right aperture
Portraits: f/1.4 to f/2.8 for beautiful background blur and subject separation.
Street photography: f/5.6 to f/8 for comfortable depth of field keeping most of the scene sharp.
Landscapes: f/8 to f/11 for maximum sharpness across the entire scene.
Low light: As wide as your lens allows (f/1.4, f/1.8) to gather maximum light without raising ISO too high.
A lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 or wider is considered a fast lens. Fast lenses cost more but give you the most creative control over depth of field and the best low-light performance.
