What is a video codec container?
A codec container (like .MP4, .MOV, or .MKV) is a file format wrapper that holds video, audio, and metadata together in one file. The container is like a box — it packages everything, while the codec inside (H.264, H.265, ProRes) is what actually compresses the video data.
Codec vs container — two different things
The codec (H.264, H.265, ProRes) determines how the video is compressed — it affects quality, file size, and editing performance.
The container (.MP4, .MOV, .MXF) is just the packaging format. The same H.264 video can be stored in MP4 or MOV — the video quality is identical.

Which container should you use?
For maximum compatibility, use MP4. Every device, platform, and editing application supports it.
If you edit in Final Cut Pro on Mac, MOV may offer slightly smoother integration but the difference is minimal.
The container has zero effect on video quality — focus on the codec (H.264 vs H.265 vs ProRes) and bitrate instead.
When your camera offers both MP4 and MOV with the same codec and bitrate, choose MP4 for maximum compatibility unless you have a specific reason to use MOV.
