32-bit float audio recording captures an extraordinarily wide dynamic range — so wide that it is virtually impossible to clip (distort) the recording regardless of how loud the source is. You can record without setting gain levels and fix everything perfectly in post-production.
Why 32-bit float is revolutionary
Traditional audio recording (16-bit or 24-bit) has a fixed ceiling. If the input signal exceeds that ceiling, it clips — the waveform is chopped flat and the distortion is permanent and unrecoverable.
32-bit float recording has a dynamic range of approximately 1,528 dB — far exceeding any real-world sound. The loudest possible sound on Earth (194 dB) is nowhere close to clipping it.
This means you can record without worrying about gain settings. If the audio is too quiet, you raise it in post with no noise penalty. If it is too loud, you lower it with no distortion. The recording captures everything faithfully.
How it works technically
32-bit float uses a floating-point number format instead of a fixed integer format. The exponent adjusts automatically to the signal level, like scientific notation for audio.
Standard 24-bit recording has about 144 dB of dynamic range. 32-bit float has over 1,500 dB — more than 10x the usable range.
The key requirement is that the microphone and preamp must capture the signal cleanly. 32-bit float prevents digital clipping in the recorder, but if the analog signal distorts in the microphone capsule itself, no amount of bit depth can fix that.
