What is a 3-axis vs 5-axis gimbal?
A gimbal is a motorized stabilizer that keeps your camera level and steady during movement. A 3-axis gimbal stabilizes pan (horizontal rotation), tilt (vertical rotation), and roll (side-to-side tilt). Some marketing refers to 5-axis, but true camera gimbals are 3-axis — the extra axes come from combining the gimbal with in-camera IBIS.
What the three axes do
Pan axis (yaw): Keeps the camera from swinging left and right as you walk or turn. Allows smooth horizontal rotation.
Tilt axis (pitch): Keeps the camera from bobbing up and down with your footsteps. Allows smooth vertical tilting.
Roll axis: Keeps the horizon level even when your hand tilts. The most important axis for professional-looking footage.
Together, these three axes produce buttery smooth footage even while walking, running, or moving through uneven terrain.
3-axis gimbal vs in-camera IBIS
Gimbals handle large movements — walking, jogging, going up stairs, panning around a room. IBIS cannot compensate for these.
IBIS handles micro-vibrations — the small shakes and tremors that a gimbal’s motors are too slow to correct.
The best handheld video comes from combining both — gimbal for large motion, IBIS for the remaining micro-shake. This produces gimbal footage that looks almost like a Steadicam.

Balancing ease: Some gimbals use quick-release plates and axis locks for faster setup. This matters when you change lenses frequently.
Follow modes: Pan follow (most used), lock mode, follow all — different modes suit different shooting situations.
