Features & Compatibility

The RODE VideoMic Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone is a professional-grade directional condenser mic designed for mobile journalists, vloggers, and run-and-gun filmmakers who demand cleaner audio from their DSLR, mirrorless, or video camera. Powered by a single 9V battery delivering up to 100 hours of runtime, it delivers supercardioid directional pickup that isolates your subject from distracting background noise — a dramatic upgrade over any built-in camera microphone.

Featuring a selectable 80 Hz bass roll-off filter and a three-position pad (0 / -10 / -20 dB), the RODE VideoMic adapts instantly to challenging acoustic environments, from loud concerts to wind-prone outdoor shoots. Its integrated Rycote Lyre shockmount eliminates handling vibration, the included foam windscreen tames breeze noise, and the permanently attached 3.5mm TRS dual-mono cable means you are ready to record the moment you mount it to your camera shoe.

Key features

  • Supercardioid polar pattern focuses on sound directly in front of the mic while rejecting noise from the sides and rear — perfect for vlogging and run-and-gun shooting.
  • Up to 100-hour battery life from a single 9V battery, with a colour-changing LED (green to red) that warns you before performance is affected.
  • Selectable -10 dB / -20 dB pad prevents distortion and clipping when recording loud sound sources, keeping your audio clean in any environment.
  • 80 Hz high-pass filter cuts rumble from air conditioners, traffic, and handling noise so your recordings stay clear and broadcast-ready.
  • Integrated Rycote Lyre shockmount mounts directly to a camera hot shoe or boompole (3/8″ thread) and isolates the capsule from vibrations without fragile rubber bands.
  • Permanently attached 3.5mm TRS dual-mono cable delivers an identical signal to both input channels of your camera or portable recorder — no channel-selection hassle required.

Frequently asked questions

What camera connections does the RODE VideoMic support?
The VideoMic comes with a permanently attached coiled 3.5mm TRS cable wired in dual-mono, so it connects directly to any camera or portable recorder with a 3.5mm input. Using the optional RODE SC4 adapter you can plug it into a smartphone or tablet with a 3.5mm TRRS jack, and with the optional RODE VXLR adapter you can connect it to camcorders or mixers that have XLR inputs.

How long does the battery last, and how will I know when it needs replacing?
The VideoMic runs on a single 9V battery for up to 100 hours. The power LED glows green during normal operation and turns red when the battery should be replaced. The mic will continue to function for approximately one hour after the indicator turns red, though audio performance may be compromised. Use the power switch to conserve battery when the mic is not in use.

Can I use the RODE VideoMic for outdoor filming where wind noise is a problem?
Yes. The VideoMic ships with an integrated foam windscreen that reduces noise from breezes, fans, and air conditioners. For more demanding outdoor conditions, RODE recommends adding a furry windshield such as the RODE DeadCat (sold separately) for maximum wind-noise reduction. The 80 Hz high-pass filter also helps by rolling off low-frequency rumble common in outdoor environments.
