How to use Canon EF lenses on an RF mirrorless body with an adapter?
Canon’s official EF-RF adapter lets you use your entire EF and EF-S lens collection on any RF mirrorless camera with full autofocus, image stabilization, and electronic aperture control. There is zero optical quality loss — the adapter is simply a spacer with electrical contacts.
Setting up the adapter
Step 1: Remove the RF body cap from your camera and the rear cap from your EF lens.
Step 2: Attach the EF-RF adapter to the camera body first. Align the red dot on the adapter with the red dot on the body, twist until it clicks.
Step 3: Mount the EF lens onto the adapter. Align the red dot (EF) or white dot (EF-S) on the lens with the corresponding dot on the adapter, twist until it clicks.
Step 4: Turn on the camera. The lens is recognized automatically — autofocus, IS, and aperture all work immediately. No firmware updates or settings changes needed.
Adapter versions available
Standard EF-RF adapter: The basic adapter. No glass, no extras. Full functionality. This is all most people need.
EF-RF adapter with Control Ring: Adds a customizable ring on the adapter that you can assign to ISO, aperture, exposure compensation, or other functions. Like having an extra control dial.
EF-RF Drop-In Filter adapter: Has a slot for drop-in filters (ND, CPL) between the lens and body. Extremely useful for video — one ND filter works with every lens instead of buying filters for each lens diameter.

Performance with adapted EF lenses
Autofocus: Modern EF lenses (L series, STM, Nano USM) autofocus nearly as fast as native RF lenses. Older EF lenses with micromotor AF may be noticeably slower.
Image quality: Identical to the EF lens on a DSLR body. The adapter adds no glass and introduces no degradation.
IBIS: RF bodies with IBIS (R6, R5, R3) provide stabilization to EF lenses that have no IS built in — giving vintage primes stabilization they never had.
Eye AF: Works with adapted EF lenses. The RF body’s superior AF system actually makes many EF lenses focus better than they did on DSLR bodies.
If you are transitioning from Canon DSLR to RF mirrorless, buy the standard EF-RF adapter immediately — it costs very little and makes your entire EF lens collection instantly compatible. Buy new RF lenses gradually over time.
