How to light a product for e-commerce photography on a budget?
Great product photography for e-commerce requires even, clean lighting that accurately represents colors and textures. You do not need expensive studio equipment — a single LED light, a white surface, and some diffusion material can produce results that compete with professional product studios.
The simple white background setup
Background: A large sheet of white paper or poster board curved from a table up against a wall. The curve eliminates the visible horizon line, creating a seamless white background.
Main light: One LED panel or COB light with a softbox, positioned above and slightly in front of the product at 45 degrees. Soft light minimizes harsh shadows and evenly illuminates the product.
Fill: A white foam board or reflector on the opposite side of the main light. This bounces light back into the shadows so both sides of the product are visible.
Camera position: Tripod at product level or slightly above. Use a 50mm or longer lens to minimize distortion. Shoot in RAW for maximum flexibility in post.
Lighting specific product types
Matte products (clothing, electronics): Standard soft light from above. Avoid direct reflections. Two lights at 45 degrees from each side give even coverage.
Reflective products (jewelry, watches, glass): Use a light tent or large diffusion panel. The product reflects whatever it sees — so surround it with white diffused surfaces.
Transparent products (bottles, glassware): Light from behind (backlighting). Place the light behind the product and use white cards on the sides to add shape. The light passing through the object creates beautiful luminosity.
Food: Side or back lighting with a reflector on the opposite side. Overhead flat lighting makes food look boring — directional light reveals texture and creates appetite appeal.

Post-processing for e-commerce
White balance: Set precisely using a gray card before shooting. Product colors must be accurate — customers return items that do not match the listing.
Background removal: If you need a pure white background (Amazon standard), slightly overexpose the background or remove it in post with Photoshop or free tools like remove.bg.
Consistency: Every product in your store should be photographed with the same lighting, angle, and background. Create a template setup and replicate it for every item.
Multiple angles: E-commerce customers expect 3-5 views minimum — front, back, side, detail, and in-use or lifestyle shot.
The most important thing in product photography is consistency, not perfection. A store where every product photo has the same clean, even lighting looks professional. Mix-and-match lighting styles across products looks amateur.
