What is a macro lens?
A macro lens is designed to focus at extremely close distances, allowing you to photograph small subjects at life-size (1:1) magnification or greater. At 1:1, a subject measuring 24mm wide fills the entire width of a full frame sensor — revealing detail invisible to the naked eye.
What makes macro lenses special
Regular lenses have a minimum focusing distance that prevents you from getting very close. A standard 50mm lens might focus no closer than 45cm. A 50mm macro can focus at 15-20cm.
At 1:1 magnification, the subject is reproduced at its actual size on the sensor. A 1cm insect occupies 1cm on the sensor surface — filling the frame with incredible detail.
Macro lenses are also optimized for flat-field sharpness — sharp from edge to edge at close distances, unlike regular lenses designed for normal shooting distances.
Macro lens focal lengths
50-60mm macro: Compact and affordable. Very close working distance (15-20cm). Best for products, food, and controlled subjects.
90-105mm macro: The most popular range. Comfortable working distance (25-30cm). Great for insects, jewelry, and general macro.
150-200mm macro: Long working distance (40-50cm). Ideal for insects and wildlife that flee when approached. Also excellent as portrait lenses.

Do you need a dedicated macro lens?
If you regularly photograph small subjects — jewelry, watches, insects, flowers, product details — a dedicated macro lens is essential. No other lens achieves true 1:1 magnification.
For occasional close-up work, alternatives exist: extension tubes (affordable, reduce minimum focus distance), close-up filters (screw onto existing lenses), or lens reversing rings (very cheap, manual focus only).
Macro lenses also double as excellent portrait lenses — their optical quality at normal distances is outstanding.
A 90-100mm macro lens is the most versatile choice — it works beautifully for macro, portraits, and product photography. It is three lenses in one.
