Features & Compatibility

The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A032) is a full-frame standard zoom for the Nikon F mount — the single most useful lens range in photography, covering wide-angle reportage at 24mm through to flattering short-telephoto portraits at 70mm, all at a constant f/2.8.

The G2 revision is built around an ambitious optical formula: 17 elements in 12 groups including 2 XR (extra refractive index) elements, 3 LD (low dispersion) elements, 3 glass-moulded aspherical elements and 1 hybrid aspherical element. That count exists to suppress the chromatic aberration and edge softness that standard zooms historically traded away for their convenience.

Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation) system is rated at 5 stops to CIPA standards, which is what makes this lens usable handheld in low light at the wide end. A minimum object distance of 0.38m with a 1:5 maximum magnification lets it work much closer than most 24-70mm lenses, doubling as a capable close-up tool for detail and product shots.

Key Features

  • Constant f/2.8 across the range: Exposure and depth of field stay consistent as you zoom, and the fast aperture keeps shutter speeds up indoors and at events.
  • 5-stop Vibration Compensation: CIPA-rated 5 stops of stabilisation, which in practice means sharp handheld frames at shutter speeds far below the usual 1/focal-length rule.
  • 17 elements in 12 groups: Including 2 XR, 3 LD, 3 glass-moulded aspherical and 1 hybrid aspherical element to control chromatic aberration and maintain edge-to-edge sharpness.
  • Close focus at 0.38m: A 1:5 maximum magnification ratio lets you fill the frame with small subjects — unusually capable for a standard zoom.
  • 9-blade circular diaphragm: Retains a circular aperture opening even stopped down two stops from wide open, keeping out-of-focus highlights round rather than polygonal.
  • USD ultrasonic autofocus: Fast, quiet ring-type ultrasonic focusing with full-time manual override.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cameras does this Tamron 24-70mm G2 fit?
This version is built for the Nikon F mount, so it fits Nikon full-frame DSLRs such as the D850, D780 and D750, and works on Nikon APS-C DSLRs too, where the angle of view narrows to the equivalent of roughly 36-105mm.

How effective is the Vibration Compensation?
Tamron rates the VC system at 5 stops to the CIPA standard. That means you can handhold at shutter speeds around five stops slower than you otherwise could and still expect sharp results, which makes a real difference in dim interiors and at events where flash is not welcome.

How close can the lens focus?
Its minimum object distance is 0.38m (15 in) with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5. That is noticeably closer than most 24-70mm zooms, so it doubles as a useful lens for detail, food and product shots without a dedicated macro.

What filter size does it take, and what does it weigh?
It uses 82mm filters and weighs 900g in the Nikon F version, with a maximum diameter of 88.4mm and a length of 108.5mm. A lens hood, caps and a pouch are supplied as standard.
