What is focus peaking?
Focus peaking is a visual focus aid that highlights the edges of in-focus areas with a colored overlay (typically red, yellow, or white) on your camera’s screen or electronic viewfinder. It makes manual focusing fast and accurate — especially useful for video and vintage lens users.
How focus peaking works
The camera analyzes contrast in real-time. Areas with the highest contrast (sharpest edges) are the ones in focus. Focus peaking paints those edges with a bright color so you can see exactly where focus falls.
As you turn the focus ring, the colored highlights move across the frame — when they land on your subject’s eyes or the detail you care about, you know you are in focus.
Focus peaking works with any lens, including manual focus lenses, vintage adapted lenses, and cinema lenses that do not support autofocus.
When to use focus peaking
Manual focus lenses: Essential for accurate focusing without autofocus assistance.
Video: Many videographers prefer manual focus for precise, repeatable focus pulls. Peaking shows exactly where focus sits at all times.
Macro photography: At extreme magnification, depth of field is razor thin. Peaking helps you nail the exact focus plane.
Low light: When autofocus hunts or struggles, switching to manual focus with peaking can be faster and more reliable.

Setting up focus peaking
Most mirrorless cameras have focus peaking built in. Check your menu under Focus Assist or Peaking Display.
Choose a peaking color that contrasts with your scene — red works well for most scenes, white for dark scenes, yellow for nature.
Set peaking sensitivity to medium. Too high shows false positives everywhere, too low misses subtle focus shifts.
Combine peaking with magnification (punch-in zoom on the EVF) for absolute precision on critical shots.
