What is pixel size and how does it affect low-light performance?
Pixel size (measured in micrometers, µm) describes how large each individual light-gathering element on the sensor is. Larger pixels collect more light per exposure, which directly translates to cleaner images at high ISO and better low-light performance.
Why bigger pixels mean cleaner images
Think of each pixel as a bucket collecting raindrops (photons). A bigger bucket catches more rain in the same time. More photons per pixel means a stronger signal relative to the electronic noise the sensor generates.
This signal-to-noise ratio determines how clean or noisy your image looks at high ISO. A camera with 6µm pixels will typically outperform one with 4µm pixels in low light — all else being equal.
This is why a 12MP full frame camera (huge pixels) can look cleaner at ISO 12800 than a 40MP APS-C camera (tiny pixels).
Megapixels vs pixel size — the tradeoff
For any given sensor size, increasing megapixels means shrinking each pixel. A 24MP full frame sensor has pixels roughly 6µm wide. A 60MP full frame sensor has pixels around 3.8µm.
More megapixels give you more resolution and cropping flexibility. Fewer megapixels give you cleaner high-ISO performance.
Modern image processing and BSI technology have narrowed this gap significantly, but the physics still holds — bigger pixels gather more light.

How to tell if readout speed matters for you
If you shoot sports, wildlife, or action — readout speed is critical. Rolling shutter distortion on fast subjects ruins images.
If you shoot portraits, landscapes, or studio work — readout speed is less important because your subjects are stationary.
If you shoot video — readout speed determines whether you get clean slow-motion footage or wobbly jello-effect video.
When comparing cameras, look for the electronic shutter readout time in reviews. Under 1/100s is good, under 1/200s is excellent, and global shutter is the ultimate.
