## Shutter angle is a way of expressing **shutter speed relative to frame rate** from cinema film cameras. A 180-degree shutter angle means the shutter is open for exactly half of each frame’s duration — this is the standard for natural-looking motion blur in video.

## **The 180-degree rule explained**

The standard is to set your shutter speed to **double your frame rate**. At 24fps, use 1/48s. At 30fps, use 1/60s. At 60fps, use 1/120s. This produces the motion blur audiences expect from professional video.

Too fast a shutter (1/500s at 24fps) makes motion look staccato and harsh. Too slow (1/24s at 24fps) makes everything smear into blur.

The 180-degree convention dates back to mechanical film cameras where a rotating circular shutter covered exactly half the frame cycle.
