## A shotgun mic is a **long, directional microphone** pointed at the subject from a distance (on-camera or on a boom pole). A lavalier (lav) mic is a **tiny microphone clipped to the subject’s clothing**, very close to their mouth. Each excels in different production scenarios.

## **Shotgun mic — characteristics**

**Placement:** Mounted on camera, on a boom pole above the subject, or on a stand. Always pointed toward the sound source from a distance.

**Sound quality:** Natural, room-inclusive sound. Captures the subject with a sense of the environment. Can sound thin or echoey if too far away.
