## Proxy editing is a workflow where you create **smaller, lower-resolution copies** of your video files for editing, then swap back to the original full-resolution files for final export. This lets you edit 4K, 6K, or 8K footage smoothly even on a modest computer.

## **How proxy editing works**

Your camera records 4K at 400 Mbps — beautiful quality but heavy files that make your timeline stutter.

You create proxy files — typically 1080p or 720p at low bitrate (10-20 Mbps). Small, fast, and your computer handles them effortlessly.

You edit your entire project using proxies — cutting, grading, adding effects. When done, the software swaps proxies for originals and exports at full quality.

The swap is automatic because proxies and originals are linked by filename.

## **When to use proxy editing**

Your computer **struggles with timeline playback** — dropped frames, stuttering, or lag when scrubbing.

You are editing **4K or higher resolution**, especially in H.265 which is computationally heavy to decode.

You are working on a **laptop** in the field and need smooth editing without a powerful desktop.

Almost every professional video editor uses proxies as standard practice — it is the correct workflow, not a workaround.

## **Setting up proxy editing**

**Adobe Premiere Pro:** Right-click clips → Create Proxies → choose format and resolution.

**DaVinci Resolve:** Right-click in media pool → Generate Optimized Media.

**Final Cut Pro:** File → Transcode Media → Create Proxy Media.

Some cameras record proxy files simultaneously alongside full-resolution files, saving you the conversion step entirely.
