## Internal recording means the camera saves video to its **own memory card**. External recording means video is sent via HDMI or SDI to a separate device (like an Atomos Ninja) that captures higher quality or different codecs than the camera can record internally.

## **Why use an external recorder**

Some cameras output a **cleaner, higher quality signal** via HDMI than what they record internally. For example, 8-bit H.264 internally but 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes via HDMI externally.

External recorders can bypass the camera’s **recording time limits and heat throttling** since the heavy encoding is offloaded to the external device.

External recorders provide a large, bright **monitoring display** with waveforms, false color, and focus peaking — often better than the camera’s built-in screen.

## **When internal recording is enough**

Modern cameras have dramatically improved internal recording. Many now offer **10-bit 4:2:2 internal** in H.265 or ProRes — eliminating the main reason for external recorders.

If your camera records 10-bit internally at sufficient bitrate, an external recorder adds **bulk, weight, cost, and complexity** without meaningful quality improvement.

For run-and-gun, documentary, and portability-focused work, internal recording is almost always preferable.

## **Making the decision**

Use **internal** if your camera records 10-bit internally and you value portability and simplicity.

Use **external** if your camera only outputs 10-bit via HDMI, needs ProRes or RAW, or you need unlimited recording times.

Budget for the full setup: recorder ($300-700), SSD media ($100-200), HDMI cable, mounting cage, and battery. It adds up.

##

Before buying an external recorder, check if your camera already records 10-bit internally. Many cameras released after 2022 do — making external recorders unnecessary for most creators.
