## Focus breathing is an optical phenomenon where the **field of view changes as you adjust focus**. When you rack focus from a far subject to a near subject, the image appears to zoom in or out slightly. This is a problem for video but rarely noticeable in photography.

## **Why focus breathing matters for video**

In filmmaking, rack focus (shifting focus between two subjects at different distances) is a fundamental technique. If the lens breathes, the frame visibly shifts — subjects appear to grow or shrink during the focus pull.

This looks unprofessional and distracting. Cinema lenses are specifically designed to minimize breathing to near-zero levels.

For photography, breathing is irrelevant because you see the final focused image — the shift only happens during the transition, not in the captured photo.

## **Which lenses breathe less**

**Cinema lenses** are designed with breathing suppression as a priority — the gold standard.

**Modern mirrorless lenses** increasingly include breathing compensation — Sony, Canon, and Nikon have released lenses with minimal breathing.

**Some cameras correct it electronically** by slightly cropping and scaling during focus changes.

**Older DSLR lenses** typically have more noticeable breathing because it was not a design priority.

## **Can breathing be corrected?**

Some cameras offer **in-camera breathing compensation** — the camera slightly crops and scales to counteract the breathing. Sony, Nikon, and Canon offer this on select bodies and lenses.

The tradeoff is a slight **crop of the image** to allow room for compensation.

If your camera does not support it, choose lenses with naturally low breathing or use cinema lenses.

##

If you shoot video with frequent focus pulls, test any lens for breathing before buying. Rack focus between near and far subjects and watch for framing shifts. Many YouTube reviews specifically measure this.
