## An ND (Neutral Density) filter is a **dark glass filter** that reduces the amount of light entering the lens without affecting color. It is like sunglasses for your camera — letting you use wider apertures or slower shutter speeds in bright conditions where the image would otherwise be overexposed.

## **Why you need ND filters**

For **video**, the 180-degree shutter rule requires your shutter speed to be double your frame rate (1/48s at 24fps). In bright sunlight, this lets in too much light even at f/8 and ISO 100. An ND filter reduces the light so you can maintain the correct shutter speed.

For **photography**, ND filters let you use wide apertures in bright light (f/1.4 portraits outdoors without overexposing) or very slow shutter speeds (smooth water, light trails, motion blur) even in daylight.

Without an ND filter, your only options in bright light are to increase shutter speed (wrong for video) or close the aperture (loses shallow DOF). ND gives you creative control.

## **ND filter strengths**

**ND2 (1 stop):** Minimal reduction. Rarely needed.

**ND4 (2 stops):** Light reduction. Useful for slightly bright conditions.

**ND8 (3 stops):** Moderate reduction. Good for overcast to partly sunny days.

**ND64 (6 stops):** Strong reduction. Handles bright daylight for video work.

**ND1000 (10 stops):** Extreme reduction. Long exposure photography in full daylight — waterfalls, clouds, and light trails.

**Variable ND:** Adjustable from ND2 to ND32 or higher by rotating the filter ring. Most convenient for video.

**Fixed ND:** One specific density. Best optical quality. No cross-pattern artifacts. Stack multiple for stronger reduction. Preferred by photographers and cinema.

**Variable ND:** Adjustable density by rotating. Extremely convenient for video where lighting changes (moving indoors to outdoors). Some introduce a cross pattern at maximum density.

For **video creators**: A variable ND is the most practical choice. Adjust on the fly without swapping filters.

For **photographers**: Fixed ND in 3-stop and 6-stop covers most needs. Add a 10-stop for long exposures.

## 

If you shoot video outdoors, a variable ND filter is the single most important accessory after your lens. Without it, you cannot maintain proper shutter speed in daylight and your footage will look amateurish with that stuttery, harsh motion look.
