## Aliasing is a visual artifact where **fine details and sharp edges appear jagged, stair-stepped, or shimmer** instead of looking smooth. It happens when the sensor or output resolution cannot accurately represent the fine detail in the scene — the detail is below the sampling resolution.

## **Why aliasing happens**

Digital sensors and displays are made of discrete pixels in a grid. When a scene contains details finer than the pixel grid can resolve — thin cables, roof tiles, fabric patterns — those details get misrepresented.

Diagonal lines appear as stair-steps. Very fine patterns produce false colors or shimmering (moiré is a specific type of aliasing).

Aliasing is worse when the camera **line-skips or pixel-bins** for video — skipping rows creates gaps that introduce more artifacts.

## **How cameras fight aliasing**

**Oversampling:** Reading the full sensor resolution (6K or 8K) and downscaling to output (4K). Extra data smooths aliasing naturally — the best solution.

**Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF):** Slightly softens the image before it reaches the sensor. Trades a tiny bit of sharpness for cleaner results.

**Anti-aliasing in post:** Software can reduce aliasing during editing, but capturing clean footage from the start is always better.

## **Reducing aliasing in your footage**

Choose a camera that **oversamples** for video — full sensor readout downscaled to 4K produces the cleanest results.

Avoid shooting subjects with extremely fine repetitive patterns, or change your angle slightly to shift the interference.

If aliasing appears in post, apply gentle **anti-aliasing or chroma noise reduction** targeted at affected areas.

##

When comparing cameras for video, check whether they use full-sensor readout or line-skipping for 4K. Full readout cameras produce dramatically cleaner video with less aliasing and moiré.
